For my part, my introduction to "magic" went something like this: 1) Finding the coin tricks performed by a number of older kids to be vaguely interesting but not caring so much how they were done--in the sense that they were ever so obviously tricks (and understood as such even by a five year old) and nothing more. Vs. 2) Being positively astounded that one can get a flame going via the discrete use of a magnifying glass, some readily available summer sunlight, and any sort of fuel to be burned (dry leaves and twigs being a particular favorite). One was merely an empty, deceptive skill to master, the other an entire art, science, state-of-being to discover. I made my choice early in life and I am ever so glad to have done so. (Plus, I've always been a bit of a pyromaniac, but we won't mention that, will we...oops.)

Consciousness as the ghost in the machine (brain/body)? Makes perfect sense to me.
